WHAT IS A MALA?

WHAT IS A MALA?

A Japamala or mala is a string of prayer beads commonly used in Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism, Buddhism, Shintō and other traditions for the spiritual practice known in Sanskrit as japa. They are similar to other forms of prayer beads used in various world religions and sometimes referred to in English as a "rosary".

Malas are used for keeping count while reciting, chanting, or mentally repeating a mantra or the name or names of a deity. Malas are more than just jewellery. They are powerful tools for meditation. You do not need to be religious or have a spiritual practice to wear mala beads - you can simply wear them as a reminder of the personal intention you've set, or when seeking a more peaceful mind, body, and spirit.
